2016 Favourites

Thursday, 5 January 2017

I'm sure you've noticed, but it turned 2017 a day or two ago (Happy New Year by the way) and since then I've been busy compiling this post. Note to self - posts which require a huge amount of collages, links and text take at least x5 times longer than you think, give yourself more time.

Before I get caught up rambling on about my plans, hopes and dreams for the next 12 months, I am going to reflect on last year. This is a process I do monthly in my personal life (with my Happiness Planner) and is something I have started to do with my monthly favourites posts here on The Polish List.

My Favourite Nail Polish of 2016
Asking any nail blogger to pick a favourite nail polish is like asking a parent to pick their favourite child, it's a question that has no answer. Over the last year I have been lucky enough to work with many incredible brands and I have used so many beautiful polishes, that I thought the only fair way to break this question down was to go by my Monthly Favourite nail polishes.

January - Barry M 'Bug A Blue'
February - Candy Coat '041 - Neon Pink'
March - Primark 'Matte Mint'
April - Jessica Nails 'Glam Squad'
May - Barry M 'Golden Sands'
June - Collection 'Oyster Pearl'
July - L.O.G Cosmetics 'Pinky Swear'
August - Models Own 'Beach Fire'
September - Zoya 'Aggie'
October - Leighton Denny 'Let Your Hair Down'
November - Models Own 'Fine Flicker'
December - Jessica Nails 'Gold Vermeil'

There will never be a year where a pink doesn't feature in my favourites, however I am surprised by the amount of nude/golds, I usually love the brighter shades.

My Favourite Nail Art
2016 was a year of highs and lows as far as nail art was concerned, however I managed to cover most of the year and therefore have an amazing 91 designs (give or take) to choose from.

#2016bestnine - based on likes and views from my Instagram page. Of course those pasta nails are number 1, they've got nearly 10k likes on my IG now and have been shared on more pages than I can count. Note, they were done as a joke for world pasta day (25th October) so keep an eye out for more pasta nails next year.

However my favourite nine are very different so here they are, please let me know which is your favourite.

As far as nail art goes, it was amazing to introduce stamping into my 'skills', however I have stopped doing as much freehand - stamping actually takes a huge amount of time. So I am going to try and balance stamping and freehand this year.

Swatches
Swatching nail collections and creating collages is one of my favourite things to do (can't you tell) and I've been very busy this year. I can't bare to count how many individual swatches I've done so I thought I would summaries them by brand.

Barry M have released a total of 46 nail paints in 2016.

Models Own have released a total of 25 new nail polishes over 5 collections.

Jessica Nails have released 18 new main line colours over 3 collections.

Collection released the stunning Solar Shine collection featuring 12 incredible polishes.

L.O.G Cosmetics released The Beautician Collection which featured 12 stunning colours.

Primark have release 8 Gel Effect polishes and a ton of other gorgeous shades.

MeeBox - I have reviewed 6 months of boxes from July (August, September, October, November, December) and here is a collage of the swatches I've done. I think my favourite month was 'December', the colours were amazing and the extras were so cute and incredibly generous.

Leighton Denny released The Roaring 20's collection (amongst others which I wasn't fortunate enough to receive for review) and featured 7 beautiful shades.

These are some other random swatches from 2016 (I have a ton of unpublished swatches which I'm sure I'll get around to posting in January 2017).

My Favourite Blogposts
Like the nail art section of this post, I thought the easiest way to narrow this down was to give my monthly favourite blog posts.

January - Barry M Spring 2016 Launch Party
February - Valentines 2016 - Nail Art Wheel
March - Barry M Teal Tips with Ovacome 2016
April - Daisy Dixon 'Olivia' Watch & Matching Nail Art
May - Barry M Lolly Gloss Gradient Nail Art
June - Jessica Nails 'Polished In Pastels' Collection
July - My Birthday 2016
August - Barry M A/W16 Product Launch
September - Jessica Nails 'Into The Wild' Collection
October - Barry M AW16 Coconut Infusion Nail Paint Collection
November - Candy Cane Nail Art
December - Christmas Tree Nail Art

I hope that this year (2017) I have a ton more to chose from and across a wider variety of topics. I can get very blinkered with reviews and nail art. It'd be fun to inject so more nail related items amongst my usual postings.

My Favourite Bloggers
2016 has seen the rise and fall of loads of amazing nail bloggers. It's always sad when bloggers I love decide to call it quits, however nail blogging is a massive commitment and it takes up so much time, more so than many other kinds of blogging. My bf actually has a beer blog and he often gets a bottle photographed, tasted, pictures edited and the post written up before I've finished swatching. Therefore it's understandable when some decide to reclaim a large portion of their lives and pack away the brushes. Although there have been many dry periods in my blogging history, I always come back to it, it's not just a hobby for me, it's my therapy and without it I would have gone crazy.

Anyway here's a list of my current favourite nail bloggers, in no particular order.

Marta from Furious Filer
Tracy from Olivia Jade Nails
Anne from Grape Fizz Nails
Alice of One Nail To Rule Them All
Chloe from Tipped Off Nails
Bethany from B Nailed To Perfection
Helen from Hellz Nails
Laura-Louise from Red Heads Paint It Better
Kim of Kimett Kolor
Becca from A Certain Becca Nails
Sam of A Nail & Beauty Files

I always gravitate to these ladies blogs first, although I try and read as many as I can. If you have a nail blog, leave your link in the comments below and I'll def check it out.

Favourite Blogging Moments
2016 has been full of blogging highlights for me, I was invited to Barry M's launch events (Spring and Autumn),

I received my first non-polish blog gift of a gorgeous Daisy Dixon watch. I have started working with lots of new brands, more people than ever have been commenting on my posts (I can not tell you how much that means to me) and my little blog made the Top 100 Nail Blogs on the web according to Feedspot (I was actually number 27). I want to take this moment to thank you (yes you the person reading this) and all the lovely brands that allow me to continue to pursue this passion of mine.

As I move forward with my blog in 2017 I would love to continue to showcase new collections, my nail art and any nail related products that I find interesting. Monthly Favourites are going to stay and I may bring back some other regular features like #tbt and Fashion Friday.

My main goal and the only thing I am going to commit to is a regular posting schedule, this is something that equally thrills and terrifies me. I need to challenge myself and I hate that I let my blog drop when I get busy, so by announcing that on every Thursday and Sunday you will definitely get a post, it'll make me prioritise my time and ensure that I get my weekly fix of nail art. I'm not saying I won't post on other days, but I will always post on those days.

Please let me know what your favourites from 2016 have been, whether they're personal or nail related and what you're goals are for 2017.

All the best,

Vicky xx

  1. I can't even tell you how excited I was when I saw this blog post pop up in my inbox this morning!! Such a great post and round up for an awesome year for you. I was quite surprised how much work went into favourites posts. I was expecting them to be "easy" lol.

And HUGE thank you for including me in your favourite bloggers for 2016. That has just made my day! Hopefully I can keep it up and make it into your 2017 list too :)

    1. Ah thank you so much. I loved reading your 'favourites of 2016' series but knew I'd run out of time to do something that in depth, so I stuck with my regular style and created a massive post.
You and your blog are amazing & I really hope mine can continue to be something you'll read for the next year. You've no worries about me reading yours, that will always happen.

  2. What a great collection and review of the year, well done! I commend you for doing this on a monthly basis and am glad it helped you pick your favorite dozen children, LOL!! Brief was my thoughts about a favorite polish post -- I got so overwhelmed!! ;) I LOVE your nine favorite nail arts too!! You have such a sophisticated style.

And, what a sweetheart you are to include favorite bloggers, both for your readers' benefit and as a nod to others. Do you know I read the list and couldn't even imagine that I'd be in it, so then you can imagine how surprised I was when I clicked on the link and went...oh, this is me!! LOL Thanks -- that was a very nice moment and I'm truly touched!!

    Here's to a fabulous 2017!! Cheers, hun!!

I nearly didn't do a favourites post, but I knew I'd regret it. I love rounding things up and moving onward with a clear direction of what it is I love and what I want.
I hope you have an amazing 2017 too and continue to do some amazing blogging xx
